Cats knead, which is the act of pressing their paws alternately against a soft surface (like a blanket, your lap, or a pillow), for several reasons, many of which are instinctual. Here are some common reasons why cats knead:

Kitten Behavior: Kittens knead their mother’s belly to stimulate milk production while nursing. This behavior often carries over into adulthood, even though adult cats no longer need to nurse. It becomes a comforting action that reminds them of the safety and warmth of being with their mother.

Comfort and Relaxation: Kneading is often a sign that a cat feels comfortable and relaxed. They may knead when they’re cuddling with you, settling into a cozy spot, or simply feeling content. It’s a comforting behavior that helps them feel safe.

Marking Territory: Cats have scent glands in their paws, and when they knead, they may be marking the area as their own. This is especially common when they knead on furniture or other objects in your home.

Stretching Muscles: Kneading can also help cats stretch their muscles, particularly in their paws and legs. It’s a natural way for them to stay limber, just like how humans might stretch after waking up or sitting for a long time.

Bonding with You: Cats might knead when they’re seeking affection or bonding with their owners. If your cat kneads on your lap or near you, it can be a sign of affection and a way to show they trust you.
