Why do cats sleep so much?

Cats sleep a lot because they are naturally crepuscular animals, meaning they are most active during the dawn and dusk hours. Their sleep habits are a result of both their biology and their evolutionary history.

Here are a few reasons why cats sleep so much:

Energy Conservation: As predators, cats are designed to expend bursts of energy when hunting or playing. In the wild, they would hunt small prey, which requires short, intense bursts of energy. To be ready for these bursts, cats sleep a lot to conserve energy. Even domesticated cats retain this instinct.

Natural Sleep Cycle: Cats generally sleep between 12 to 16 hours a day, with some cats even sleeping up to 20 hours, especially as they get older. They tend to take many short naps rather than long, continuous sleep periods.

Growth and Recovery: Cats, especially kittens and older cats, need more sleep for growth, repair, and recovery. Sleep helps them rejuvenate their muscles and immune system.

Low-Stress Lifestyle: Indoor cats often have a comfortable, secure environment, so they don't have to spend energy being alert to predators or hunting. This means they can rest and nap without the stress of survival.

Temperature Regulation: Cats also tend to sleep when it’s warmer or during the hottest parts of the day, as they conserve energy and stay comfortable in a cozy spot.
